Most spells that are long distance leave the caster open to be hit or backstab (easy stunlock if in robes) however some spells can be altered to defend the caster more closely so keep an eye out for white dragon breath and all pyromancer as they can be thrown to the ground and will not be kind to you.
I test a lot of weapon for backstab and riposte.I found mustadon helberd really do a lot of damage when backstab and Greatsword [ugs] and fumeknight ugs really good when riposte.all great hammer do a lot of damage when backstab too and fast weapon with good damage when backstab is axe and spear too.
If successful, the enemy will recoil backward with a distinctive sound, and then you can do a right-hand normal attack to riposte them. Again, don't block while you're trying to riposte. The default keybind for a parry is CTRL + right click, but I would highly recommend changing this to a thumb button if your mouse has any. Tis your birth that wrongs you, not I. I haven't tried the last patch but, chaos rapier did one of the highest damage with BS/Riposte, followed by chaos bandit dagger or bandit dagger @ +15 with 40 dex. Most if not all rapiers have a higher critical modiffier followed by some knifes, I heard one of the tracers did decent BS damage.
