Fantastic and forward thinking. But yes, the focus line has been generally low brow in terms of general issues since the first gen and their propensity to rupture headgaskets, if memory serves, but do go into this knowing the focus and by extension fiesta, were built to a budget like most compact/subcompact sedans, they will offer few frills n thrills of that vintage. I grew up in the 1970s and 1980s, and my parents always preferred European cars to American cars. So growing up, instead of Buicks and Fords, we had Audi, Renault, Peugeot, Morris, MGs, VWs, Fiats and Opels. Most of these brands left the US in the 1980s. My Dad was a car lover, so we always had 3 or 4 cars at a time. As an owner of a Fiesta ST and an employee of Ford, a manual SE is a fine car - literally 99% of problems are related to the Auto trans (avoid those like the plague, worst transmission in the auto industry). However I would take a used Honda Fit any day over a SE Fiesta - it's just a nicer car and is more fun to drive.

The engine may struggle a little more, but the Fiesta feels decidedly grown up at highway speeds. The Fiesta will definitely be fine for highway driving but the Civic is an upgrade. It's even better than the Fiesta's bigger brother Focus on the highway IMO. Much less noise and vibration intrusion into the cabin.
